Aftercare
What you were wrapped in
If your tattoo has been covered with Second Skin, leave it on for a maximum of 24 hours. The dressing protects your fresh tattoo through the first part of healing.
If the Second Skin starts leaking, comes loose, or water gets underneath it, remove it immediately.
After 24 hours
- Wash your hands thoroughly.
- Carefully remove the Second Skin under lukewarm water.
- Gently wash your tattoo with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance free soap.
- Pat it dry with a clean paper towel. Don't rub.
- Leave it uncovered and let the tattoo settle.
Once the tattoo feels dry or tight, start applying a very thin layer of tattoo cream.
If your tattoo has been covered with regular plastic film, that is only there to protect it right after your appointment.
Remove the film after 2 to 3 hours
- Wash your hands.
- Carefully remove the plastic film.
- Gently wash your tattoo with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance free soap.
- Pat it dry with a clean paper towel. Don't rub.
- Leave it uncovered and let the tattoo settle.
If the tattoo feels dry or tight, apply a very thin layer of tattoo cream.
while it heals
During healing
- Keep your tattoo clean. You may wash it 2 times a day for the first 3 days.
- Apply a very thin layer of cream 2 to 4 times a day, or as needed. Better too little than too much.
- Don't scratch or pick at peeling skin or scabs.
- Avoid swimming, baths, saunas and hot tubs for at least 3 weeks, until it is fully healed.
- Avoid excessive rubbing or friction, and wear loose clothing.
- Keep it out of direct sunlight while healing.
- Sweat is not good for a new tattoo. Wait at least a week before training again.
Remember
Your tattoo doesn't need to be covered once the initial wrap is off. Clean, comfortable skin is the goal, not keeping it covered or coated in cream.
